At long last, I've prepped a demo in three stages for a golden pure and natural liquid soapmaking class:

First - I'll take you through the crock pot method
Secondly - from full trace hot process to liquid state
Lastly - liquid state to finished product to color and scent a 4 ounce bottle

You get to keep the recipe and I'll have kits available for purchase to make your own 1 1/2 gallon batch at home unscented. Scents are also available.

OCMBOCES McAvoy Center is holding my Beginner Soapmaking Class 9 am - noon on Saturday, January 30. This is a great deal since it is over a $100 value for 1/2 of that for both the BOCES fee and the supplies fee. You go home with your creation of 30 wonderfully scented and colored and herbed bars of soap. If you repeat students have a special request for scent, just contact me at classes@angelicglow.com. Remember that wonderful natural glycerin is a humectant and an emolliant for our skin.

Geneseo Arts and Crafts Festival This Weekend!

Beautiful Geneseo, NY is just south of Rochester. The annual Festival is located at Rt 20A and 39 near the College. Look for my big sign at Booth #4. Times are July 10-Friday 10-8, July 11-Saturday 10-6.

Just got back from Denver HSMG Board Strategy and Planning Meeting. A new Board will be announced July 1 and is ready, willing and able to serve. Lots of exciting things in store for HSMG members and promise of a wonderful conference in May 2010 at the Inverness Hotel in Denver.

2009 Handcrafted Soapmakers Guild Conference Report

Where do I begin? Just returned from a fabulous week in sunny and warm Palm Spring, CA at the Miramonte Resort and SPA for the 2009 HSMG Conference. As a Board Member and Chair of Programs and Services, it was a different experience this year full of meeting fellow soapmakers from around the Country.
First of all, it was alot of hard work and I got volunteer of the year.The keynote speaker was Erin Brockovich and she was amazing. A warm heart and passion for life, she's a spicey lady.The best of the best in the business came to speak and teach attendees their tricks, tips and expertise. Donna-Maria, Kayla Favorianti, Marla Bosworth, Lori Nova, Anne-Marie Faiola, Jamila White, Kelly Bloom, Linda Stevens. Made sure we had loads of fun, too! Essential Wholesale sponsored an unbelieveable party with renaissance actors, great food and drink, generous giveaways and comedians. And, of course, relaxed a little bit.
Next year's conference is already set in beautiful Denver, Colorado at the Inverness Hotel and Essential Wholesale promises their sponsorship night to be even bigger and better. In this class, we will learn about and add goat's milk, try new recipes including a vegetarian as well a swirl colors and blend essential oils. I'll teach you the math behind creating your own out of the cupboard oils recipes.

Small class allows big fun. Milt made merlot wine soap and the rest of us made goat milk with honey. Some vegan base and herbs and essential oil blends so that we had our own science fair.

Hippie Heaven

Made a batch of my Hippie Heaven soap with Patchouli, Sweet Orange and Clove essential oil and a pinch of Patchouli herb. Patchouli has had it ups and downs this past year and it continues to stay up more than down (in price that is). Many love it and many dislike it mainly due to the aromatherapy flashbacks to hippie days past. Amazing oil for skin disorders, it is misunderstood.

Here is it. I finally tried it and got it right the first time. It pays to study, research and prepare. The dead sea salt bar has fine dead sea salt in the french green clay first layer. The dead sea mud top has course dead sea salt on it plus a cubed up bar of goat's milk soap. I blended Euchalyptus, Rosemary, Tea Tree and a little squirt of Green Tea fragrance since I added Green tea herbs. Another week to wait for it to cure, patience.

Maria Gelnett — Hooked on Soap

Like many Guild members and volunteers, Maria Gelnett’s future as a soapmaker began from a preference for handmade things and curiously attending a soapmaking class. Ten years ago, when she wanted to give creative handmade items to use in gift baskets, Maria decided to attend a local soapmaking class. The process and camaraderie of the class, coupled with the aromatherapy and health benefits of using natural soap, was enough to capture her attention. One decade later, and Maria is still hooked on soap.

Today, Maria and her family own and operate Angelicglow Handcrafted Soaps (www.angelicglow.com) in the Greater Binghamton, NY area. When she is not busy with her utility career and community service, Maria teaches soapmaking classes throughout Upstate New York; and, in a weird twist of fate, she now teaches the very same class she initially took back in 1998, expanding it from introductory to advanced soapmaking classes at three local community colleges.

One of the best resources Maria says she came across as a new soapmaker was the Handcrafted Soap Makers Guild, which she learned about through the Central New York Soapmakers Group. For soapmakers just starting out, Maria recommends joining a local soapmaking group, reading books, taking classes, and learning as much as possible before experimenting with soapmaking. And of course, join the HSMG!

Maria joined the HSMG because it provides valuable member benefits, like Certification, and industry-focused information, liability insurance, and the networking that occurs at events like the impressive Annual Conference at which she volunteered as ground crew at Vermont 2008. In July of this year, Maria was appointed to the Board of Directors, and is currently serving as the Chairperson of the Programs & Services Committee.

Want to barter for soap supplies? I've lost my contact for goat's milk to be used in classes. The powder or concentrate Meyenburg brand works too but just prefer the fresh. Remember what goat's milk is good for:

Goat milk contains caprylic acid, which promotes a low ph to your bar of soap, and offers gentleness to even the most delicate skin. It brings a creamy, moisturizing feel to the skin.

pH Testing of Your Soap

Testing the pH of your soap is very simple. You need to use a wide range pH strip, which is nothing more than a very small strip of paper that changes color when exposed to an acid or a base. The strips come with a color chart that you compare the color of the strip to which is how you determine what the pH of the soap you are testing is. They can be purchased from:

These strips will test a wide range from 1 to 14 which is what you need for testing soap. The strips are very inexpensive, $1.50 per vial of 100. They can probably be purchased from some soapmaking suppliers well. Test your soap pH when just removing it from the mold. Wearing gloves, moisten the soap with water (distilled water is good but not necessary) and rub it into a thin liquid paste into which you dip the pH test strip. Compare the color of the pH strip to the color chart that comes with the strips to determine the approximate pH of the soap. Ideally the soap will test in a range between 7 and 10 and can be handled with no problem. If the soap tests above 10, just let it set for a few days and test it again. By then it is usually fine. Readings above 12 are reportedly not safe for handling or using, but will often gradually decrease to within a usable range over time.

Both eczema and psoriasis are potentially allergic conditions that can be triggered by environmental factors and dozens of other external irritants like:

Workplace chemicals
Perfumes
Animal dander
Metals (such as nickel in jewelry)

Hi Soapmakers!
Busy, busy time of year but the long awaited Homemade Laundry Recipe is here. It was a great time and I enjoyed the whole day. Thank you all - Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Homemade Laundry Soap
Make 64 loads
One whole bar of homemade soap (I used my laundry bar-100% tallow)
1/2 cup washing soda (NOT baking soda but Arm & Hammer WASHING soda)
1/2 cup borax powder (20 Mule Team Borax)
Small bucket - 2 gallon size
Grate the soap and put it in a sauce pan. (If you want to add the water all at once, it is 2 gallons of hot water.) Add 6 cups of water and heat it until the soap melts. Add the washing soda and the borax and stir until it is dissolved. Remove from heat. Pour 4 cups of hot water into the bucket. Now add your soap mixture and stir. Now add one gallon plus 6 cups of water and stir. Let the soap site for about 24 hours and it will gel. Use 1/2 cup per load. To control long term soap build up, use 2 teaspoons of white vinegar in the rinse cycle.
Notes: Finished soap is a watery gel such as "egg noodle soup" look. It is low sudsing soap (bubbles are not the cleaning agent). For scent, add 1/2 to 1 ounce of e.o. or fragrance.
The cost is $.71 scents per gallon vs. $17 per gallon of commercial brand detergent.

Parabens – Widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic industry (including moisturizers). An estimated 13,200 cosmetic and skin care products contain parabens. Studies implicate their connection with cancer. They have hormone-disrupting qualities – mimicking estrogen – and interfere with the body’s endocrine system.

If you make your own soap and make a soap whip/lotion, you can control what you put on your skin.

Beautiful building in wonderful town but the weather gave us a lake effect that hung for awhile. The show was a bust but hey, the hair and new outfit were a hit! Thanks Paul!
